Coastline and Castle

Coastline and Castle is a project that I hope to develop further. It is a series of images that looks at our sense of national identity from a historical point of view. North, south, east and west, the United Kingdom is surrounded by sea. For as far back as we can trace our history, the UK coastline was our first line of defence. It is dotted with castles and forts, structures and buildings all of which have represented for many centuries our desire to protect and defend.

It is extraordinary to see the enduring nature of these castles, and visually fascinating to see how they and the coastline around them have altered and adapted over time. Each fortress, whether grand or small scale, is a product of the time in which it was built. They hold within their walls, stories of battle and defence, and evoke an enduring need to safeguard and uphold our independence and our national identity.
